Thanks guys... It's reassuring!
New ECU wasn't fitted yet, the dealers are waiting for it to be shipped from Germany. Hopefully tomorrow or Thursday at latest. I won't rest easy till I hear its all ok!!

As a matter of interest, does anyone know what kind of money we are talking for a job like this, out of warranty? I'm guessing thousands?
i was told when mine was getting fixed under warranty that it would have cost £980 for new ecu,not sure if that was it fitted.

The guys in the workshops at VW are useless, it beggars belief!
They don't have a clue about cars, they just plug it into the vagcom and if a fault isn't found they don't have a clue. So just start replacing parts left right and center (needed or not needed)

Not to mention the £50-£100 an hour labour charge for a mechanic about as knowledgeable as my left ballsack

I've had so much bs told to me by VW in the past, latest one they couldn't fix my cruise control without supplying and fitting it new again, Steve at stattlers fixed in 30seconds for no charge.
If a car wasn't covered by warranty I wouldn't let those jokers within 50ft of my car.

The dealers are still waiting for the ECU to come in from Germany! Hopefully early next week.
When I last spoke to them the service guy did mention that their Tech had looked at the existing ECU and said it didn't have any obvious external damage... good sign I suppose.

UPDATE:

Good news. New ECU was fitted today. Yes, it took over a week to ship from Germany.
Anyway, good news is, ECU works fine and they can do diagnostics on the car. It's showing a fault in the turbo actuator which the service dept tell me is a minor issue and they should have the required part by Friday at the latest.

Whether the turbo actuator issue is in any way related to the ECU problems I don't know and the dealers don't seem to know (or care?) either.

All going well, I should be back in the car by Friday!
