DSG 'Sport' mode with diesel engines
« on: 20 May 2013, 11:37 »
Simple question really:

Have VW optimised the DSG box for use with diesel engines whilst using sport mode?

My worry is that whilst in 'Sport' mode the engine generally revs its nuts off and hold the red line for longer. This won't work for diesel engines which rev lower down the range and have max torque at around 1500rpm.

Can any Mk6 DSG GTD drivers shed any light on this?

Not a GTD I know, my my Rocco 140 TDI has DSG, and all I can say is that in Sport mode, it's quite a bit faster. Sure it does hold on to the revs longer, but never seems to run out of puff before the change up - you just ride a wall of torque. So yes, I assume the software does very much take into account the characteristics of the engine it's paired with.

That good to hear Norbreck21a, but, are there any hard facts (data) to back that up from VW?

My Passat 140 is keener to change down in S and does feel quicker. Not only accelerating, but when braking for corners too. When driving at up to 8 tenths, it will change up at just over 4000rpm, but with my foot to the floor, it will hang on all the way to the red line. If you are really on it with your foot hard down, I think you are better off in manual mode, so that you can upshift when you want to using the paddles.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I have a GTD 6 DSG and your right it does hold on to the gears for too long when going full chat in S mode.

I tend to only use S mode when approaching roundabouts to get the instant go when you need it most. and then use the steering wheel controls to change up when it starts to run out of puff.

lets hope the software in the mk7 is improved.

Thanks for that Movi. Although I'm very disappointed to hear the DSG box isn't taylored for diesel engines. No.. actually I'm pretty pissed off to hear that.

How is it acceptable to pay £1,415 pounds for an auto box that isn't attuned to the engine it's mated to? Even an layman knows diesel engines don't rev as highly as a petrol and have a lower torque band. Why would they put a bespoke rev counter into a diesel if they didn't understand the unique characteristics of a TDI? If its about cost cutting, by not remapping the characteristics of the DSG for diesel, then why not just leave the GTI rev counter in the derv and stick their engineering heads I the sand. Grrr

We can only hope they've addressed this for the mk7 diesel DSG.

Sorry for the rant  I'm just getting crabby with all this waiting
