take it this is the link g4 ecu you are talking about here?
sorry cant be of help in naming any "cheeper" versions. can I ask why you want one? cause imo if you were going through all the trouble and cost of getting an after market ecu for all the better processors and electronics in them and also the ability to tune it your self ide be wanting to get the best I could.
the standard mk4 ecu can be remaped and reprogrammed so unless you really need the link g4 ecu a standard map should suffice.
only know one person who has one of these ecu's and that's on a 600+bhp Toyota MR2 and he does all of his own tuning and tweaking to put it into different modes (reserved 300bhp for winter, moderate 400bhp for summer fun but a bit of economy for driving to work, full wack 600bhp for when he wants fun and extra economical mot test time
