Well, I spoke to my dealer and they tell me that my first order is week 33 and the amended order I placed going from a 5 door to a 3 door is week 35. They are obviously keeping their first order and have spec amended it for another customer. Changing from a 5 door to a 3 door meant a completely new order.

So 35 is last week of August, the dealer is saying delivery by mid September. This was ordered on the 21st of May, so we're talking four months or 16 weeks which is still quite slow, but reasonable.

Feel sorry for the others who are being pushed out way longer than this, must be something in the spec that's causing this that VW is not ready with? Can't see any other explanation for it.

Doesn't seem to be spec to be honest.  I know that is the reason they always give, but we have examples of orders with pretty much every option on both short and long lead times.  I strongly suspect that the dominant factor here is dealer slots allocation.  If you order from a dealer that hasn't used all its allocation you get a shorter lead time than if you are a long way back in your dealer's queue.  Bigger dealers have more slots it seems, but then they take more orders.

I'm not sure what happens if a dealer doesn't use all their allocation.  Lets say hypothetically that a typical dealer is given an allocation of one GTI per calender month.  If no one places an order (and maybe the dealer already has one on the forecourt and doesn't want another) then does that slot become defunct and everyone bumps up the queue by one?  I think this must be the easiest method.  So when dealers say things "may" come forward I guess they are hoping demand from other dealers will not be at maximum.

Why things get moved back is harder to explain.  A change to your order can cause it we have confirmed, but not every change does, so its somewhat inconsistent.  It could also be that VW deal out slots but assume a certain percent will go unfulfilled and in this case they have underestimated the number of orders.  If so the repercussions of this may still be filtering through the system as they work out the most optimal way to build the cars and then inform the dealers who inform us etc... Sounds like the dealers have to actively "check" on an order rather than automated alerts of every change.  Perhaps there are too many changes so alerts would be overkill.

Next time I speak to Lisa at VW I'll see if I can get her to comment on this theory.

Well Lisa spoke to me over lunchtime following my email reply to our conversation yesterday where I reiterated my utter disgust with VW over the whole shambles. To be fair it's not her fault, but she is, unfortunately for her, the face of VW UK. So I was polite but hard.

The long and short of it is whilst she is having sales check my order to see a) what happened to it and b) if it can be brought forward, truth is I really think VW UK are clueless as to what is happening. She also happened to let slip that she had to have a similar conversation with a number of other people and also admitted that VW UK must shoulder a portion of the responsibility with the dealers for the cock ups and errors in communication along with unrealistic delivery promises.

Of course, non of this gets me my car any quicker !

Norbreck21a: I do wonder whether dealers give out estimates of availability without consideration to allocation e.g. allocation slots would suggest that for any given dealer, if they had 2 GTI/GTD customers order within a day of each other they'll still be a month or so apart on the delivery times.

Maybe some dealers are wiser to this than others. If Dealer A gives you £14k offer for your part p/x and dealer B gives you £15k, is dealer A being tight with the valuation or do they know there's a long wait and price up your part-ex for what it'll be worth in 4 or even 5 months time vs Dealer B who prices up for 3 months time?

Any hint of goodwill gestures being forthcoming Norbeck?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

You could be right bud, however I was supposed to be the second ever order for a GTI / GTD with my dealer back in April, and Warrington VW are a large dealer and I'm told have very good allocations. In any case, being only the 2nd, I should have been right at the front of the queue.

I haven't pushed yet for compo, as if they manage (miraculously) to pull my order back on track to what I was expecting, i.e beginning of September, which I don't think is unreasonable for a mid April order,  then I'll just let it go. If however it stays as a November delivery I will go after them for everything I can get.

Well f**k my hat, my car is finally showing on the 'Track My Order'.

Now what makes that interesting is that I had a PM from another member (Hi  ) asking me to contact VW as he was curious as to why mine being a relatively early build with no changes to spec was still not showing.
I knew there was no point in hassling the dealership as I've been around through all of the mk6 launch and kind of knew what to expect. I know the dealer has a big fleet contract and I know mine won't have been anywhere near the first of the orders from the dealer (though most will have been GTDs I'd have thought).
I'm not changing car for any specific reason other than the fact that I just had a good feeling about what VW would do with the mk7 GTI knowing the mk6 had fallen behind the competition and was pretty poorly specced as standard offering poor value.
So I've been quite relaxed about the whole affair, reading the stuff on here keeps me up to date with what's happening; every day is a school day and all that.

So prompted by another member (Hi  ) and out of curiosity I just sent a very simple email to VW CC asking why my order wasn't showing.
Hey presto 24 hours later I get a reply back and nearly 48 hours later I check back and see it is now on the TMO bit of the VW UK website.

Now get this: Ordered 17 April, fairly basic spec that has never changed (PP, poverty nav, park assist and camera [cos they were cheap]), manual 3 door.

Drum roll...

... build week 40 so basically October which means November delivery?!!!

All air let out of my balloon!!!

Might as well have done what I usually do and bought an ex demo dealer thrash car after protracted negotiations over many months as it wouldn't have been any slower going.

Fair chance of dealer allocation playing a big part here though so will just have to wait. And wait. And wait...

This is exactly what I think is going on.  Its not the spec that is the problem.  We don't see anything like 'all DSG orders arriving later' etc... what we see is that depending on what dealer you go to (i.e. depending how many orders they have placed already) there is a bigger or smaller delay.

EDIT:
Incidentally, with a BW 40 you will have been waiting 34+ weeks.  Even if we are nice and start the clock running at wk22 that is still 18+ weeks, probably 20.  So when they say 20 weeks is the absolute maximum that is, shall we say, "optimistic" as well.

Pah, we're in for the long haul on this... well, some of us are!

With any luck those of us that are having to wait so long might have a few less niggles cos they'll have had ages to sort them out!! ;D
