For one of the worlds largest car companies I am absolutely astounded at how something that should be a pleasurable experience for the customer can be turned into something so bad. the customer service appears to be non existent and looks like the company are solely relying on brand loyalty to sell cars. this is not the way to win peoples loyalty no matter how good you think the VW brand is.

Good grief. That's utterly ridiculous. I ordered a new, pretty bespoke Merc first week of April, and I will have it by the end of the month. 12 weeks in total for a specialised car. Utterly bonkers waiting that sort of time for a Golf.

No way I'm waiting that sort of time for mine either, checking with my dealer now and will cancel as I must have a car by early/mid September at the latest.

Trouble is that most orders placed as early as ours and with no test drives at the point of ordering are driven by VW loyalty. Not many people would order a new £25k car without having driven one first unless they're VW fans who'll know pretty much what they're getting, aside from MK7 performance tweaks. Give it until Christmas to get all the early adopters out of the way and everyone else who orders a GTI/GTD will probably seeing theirs within 12 weeks of ordering.

Early adopters always get shafted with VW - went through the same thing with my 1st Scirocco.

Right, now I've slept on it and had a good rant with the wife, whilst still not happy (far from it), I've become a little more pragmatic overnight.

The way I see it is simple, if I am unhappy, then I can vote with my wallet and cancel. The fact that I've been a loyal customer of VW for over 10 years and have purchased 6 straight cars from them in this day and age means nowt, zip - I now accept that.

So looking around last night at an alternative to the Golf, I only really short-listed 2 models that I guess I would be "happy" with. One is the Audi A3 Sportback S-Line (similar price or maybe a touch cheaper than the GTD), however the boys over at Audi-Sport.net, are all moaning at the extended delivery times for these models, with 6 months being quite normal. So If I cancel the Golf, I would probably get the Audi no quicker than if I stuck with the Golf.

The other option was a BMW (yes I know, I know ) 320D M-Sport with a few toys. Trouble with this option is that although the guys over at BMW say they can get me a factory order for an order placed this week delivered by the end of July, price wise, it's about another £3k more than the Golf (and with not as good a trade in).

The other factor to consider is the wife's car. Whilst she is more than happy to cancel the order for her Polo GT (that's just about to arrive), on looking around last night, she finally admitted that there's no other car in this price bracket that really meets her requirements. Only a Mercedes SLK 55 AMG got her interested, but at over £50k, funnily enough I said NO !

In the cold light of day, I've come to realise that the Golf ticks all the boxes for me and is the car I really want, so whilst I'll be keeping the pressure on with VW UK and the Dealer (I've just written a stinking letter to the dealer principle of my ordering dealer), I guess I'll have to hunker down, and accept that VW just screw everyone over and accept that the car is going to be 3 months later than promised.

The "only" silver lining is that the part ex price on my Scirocco is fixed in stone, so my collateral is increasing on the car (and therefore my deposit required decreasing), and that the VW will hopefully end up with a car (my Scirocco that is), that will be worth less than market value and give them a cold. I'll also be pushing for more goodwill gestures such as contributions to some of the options, free fuel etc. etc. however I'm not sure how realistic that will be.

I think the best thing is just to forget about the car for now, enjoy the Scirocco over the summer (it is after all a beautiful car), enjoy my 50th Birthday on Friday (yes money and presents gratefully received ), have a good summer holiday and accept that the Golf will be here when it's here..........

Not sure that VW will get my business next time though.

Norbreck21a: I regularly see some canny deals on nearly new 320D M sports through the Lookers group. Been slightly tempted a few times. Being rep-mobiles they don't hold their value as well as you'd expect, making them a good 2nd hand buy. My primary reason for going VW is the residuals. Yes they're good cars, but there are others out there similarly good, but none hold their value as well as the Golf and give as good a package (standard spec). If VWs held their value similarly to an Alfa or Ford, i'd be considering something else, or buy 2nd hand.

Ever consider an A1 over the Polo for the wife? Should hold it's value considerably better (i've never understood why Polo residuals are so poor next to the Golf's).

monkeyhanger: Yeah, funnily enough the A1 was on the short-list, ( 1.4TFSI 3 Door S-Line), and that is still a possibility, however the lead times on these are not great, and funnily enough, despite the A1 and Polo being built on the same platform, the rear headroom and legroom appears quite a bit smaller. Also the wife prefers the interior of the Polo (clean lines) over the bit fussy interior of the A1 (the seats are superb though).

So just, it's definitely a possibility if things eventually go tits up

I'm really sold on the S-line seats in the A1, the GTI/GTD seats look very poor in comparison (looking too much like standard Golf seats). Unless you're piling in on the extras, you might find an A1 being built currently for general stock/no allocated owner. When you look at an S-line it is money well spent. Would the A1 see many rear seat passengers? What are your options on cancelling the Polo anyway? Is that officially late? I got the impression that it was nigh-on built already. With the Polo being out a while I didn't anticipate any major lead times with ordering one.

Just done the daily checking on the trackler website and it can't find my order number. Is the tracker knacked right now or maybe they're changing the status of my order?

Just got my order no off dealer (ordered mid May) and its showing as processing.

The dealer also said "the vehicle has gone to code 10 at the factory which means the has been accepted and very shortly we should get a confirmed production slot"

Is this code 10 just dealer BS?

  • Yes! Wait a minute... No!
I think MH is right.  They've obviously calculated that it will cost them less to have fewer slots than needed to cover early orders than it will to increase production capacity for the early period to keep us happy!  That or they just haven’t considered it… which I wouldn’t put past them.  I had thought that because we get them later than Europe it would help spread out the initial flood of orders somewhat.  Hmm.
