Is there away of removing the lower centre grille under the number plate without removing the entire bumper off? Short on time and need to replace now I finally have the replacement OEM

Have you got the new one? That should give you an idea of what holds it in place.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

You would be better off removing front bumper m8, lower grill
Has too many clips on it, which break easily,
