New owner and brakes question...
« on: 15 May 2013, 16:53 »
Hi All

I am new to the forum however with recent cars being a MK5 R32 DSG and RS4 B7 Saloon I have been an active member on R32OC and more recently RS246.

Last week I picked up a Black 5-Door, 57 Plate ED30 with DSG, 1 owner and 38k miles last week and all working well but brakes not great.

There is some corrosion/pitting on the outer permiter of all 4 discs (approx 1-2cm) and the pads are not sweeping the entire disc,  so I am looking at replacing all discs/pads and was wondering on the options here.

I spotted the following thread for Euro Car Parts / Pagid, are the parts still correct and are Pagid still recommended and OEM quality?

I am not looking to track or tune the car as it is more for wife/baby use, so I just want something of OEM quality without stealer prices.

You can contact Eurocar parts rep on here for confirmation of which brake pads and discs to go for. There is also a forum discount as well...

When I had my MK5 I ran Pagid discs front and rear but aftermarket pads front and Pagid rear.

I found the aftermarket pads an improvement in braking hot and cold.

The Pagid parts did the job is all I can say, no complaints.

May also be worth checking when the break fluid change was last undertaken and an inspection of the hydraulics.

Thankyou - the guy had paid for the full ongoing VW service on monthly DDR so all the services (inc. Brake fluid, cambelt etc) have been done on time and it has been serviced annually, with brake fluid change at last service (Sept 2012).

The MOT (Sept 2012) did pick up on the pitting of the disks so I am guessing the corrosion is due to lack of use over the past 3 years (only 7k miles) and the car being stored outside, especially as it is evident on all four discs.

I was looking to get them skimmed and replaced pads but at £50 a disc it was hardly worthwhile. Alot cheaper than the £1500 for front discs/pads I was quoted from Audi for the RS4.
