I would imagine it is a full blown castration, never mind ball ache. There are far more manuals out there than autos. It would save you time and money to just fine a manual to start with...
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Coincidentally I was think about the opposite, going from manual to auto. Sure either way it would be a bit of a job but not impossible if you have all the bits and are reasonably handy with a set of spanners.

But in your case there are plenty of manual cars and it would make sense to hold out for a good 5 speed car. I my case not so easy as automatics are few and far between and I've never seen an auto GTI in the UK so a swap would be the way to go.

Probably because they don't exist, other than any conversions people have done themselves, but I have no idea why anyone would want an auto GTI... So in fact, they probably don't exist, at all.

I normally do

Although it's still got to be easier to find a manual, surely...

Automatics MK2 Gti's were available in the US and possibly Canada as well. And my reason for thinking about it is my dodgy back, sometimes changing gear in mine can literally be a pain in the @rse !!

Haha, I hear that, gear changing in mine is fun too! But still, an auto GTI seems wrong  :undecided:

Yep definitely all wrong but I like the car and wouldn't be all that bothered if it made a bit more comfortable to drive around in. I was fortunate that the gear linkage was all sorted by the previous owner so its not to bad.

Tell that to Mk5, Mk6 and soon to be Mk7 owners that opted for DSG.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
