New tyres fitted, but........
« on: 14 May 2013, 20:49 »
Im not sure if anyone can help or has had any experience at Tyrebarn in Newbury Berkshire, but........

I took Jimmymatures advice and went to Tyrebarn to get a new set of Goodyear Eagle F1's last weekend.  My front tyres were bald as a coot on the inner edge.  Once they had put the new tyres on the front wheels I asked them to swap the front and back wheels over so the new tyres were on the back.  My thinking was to wear out the old set a bit quicker so I can then get another pair of Goodyears.

My only concern is that as the old front tyres were so worn on the inner edges and now ive put some gd tyres with plenty of tread on the front is that the geometry is more than likely now out of alignment.  Has anyone had any experience of Tyrebarn in Newbury, Berkshire and if so do you think they would have adjusted my geometry, or am I best off now going to get it checked?  My steering does feel a little heavier than it did.  I would much appreciate if anyone could lend any advice!

Cheers

Can't comment on Tyrebarn but surely the would have told you and charged you if they'd carried out a geometry check.   If inner edges were totally worn I'd get it checked.

Got mine booked in for wheel alignment check in couple of weeks.  Tyres seem ok but I fear the badly potholed roads have taken their toll on the wheels this winter and steering feels very slightly out.  It's costing me £85.

Your geometry is most likely out of true hence the wear on the inner tread.

By putting the rears on the front, your geometry is still out but your fronts now have tread on them!

No tyre fitting co. will adjust your tracking/geometry without you askng and them charging.

Get VW to do a full geometry set up, but only when you have 4 new tyres fitted.

Mine had new tyres on the front and the originals on the rear that had worn on the inner edges due to the alignment been out. I had new tyres fitted to the rear. After having nothing done but the new rears fitted, the steering wheel was off center by a few degrees when driving straight ahead. This showed that the now "square" rear tyres had altered the geometry to such an extent that the car was crabbing. Of to VW for a geometry set up (about £100) and now everything is just as it should be.

Around the same time, a bloke I know with the same car as me was having the same rear tyre wear issues. He did things the wrong way round. He had the geometry re-aligned at VW then fitted new rear tyres. Within 3000 miles, his front tyres had worn to the canvas on the inside edges. He took it back to VW and pulled his face and after lots of arguing, they fitted two new front tyres and re-did the alignment FOC.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Cool. Did you get the full 4 wheel alignment done?

I have my car aligned twice a year. When my summer wheels go on and then when my winter wheels go on  :nerd:

No just the fronts. No uneven wear issues on the rears.
