Is running in method a big factor on oil consumption for TSFI?

It has been for me and my previous VW TDIs. They've all been run in nicely with lots of variety in engine speed, with the occasional incursion to 2/3 throttle, for the first 1000 miles, and none of them have used a drop of oil between services, given good economy and a decent power output. There is one exception. A 140TDI Golf MK5 GT I had was bought from VW Lookers in Burnley via UKNEWCARS and driven directly from the dealership down to relatives in Southampton. That car pretty much sat at 75mph in 6th for the first 300 miles (did the same going back to Newcastle a few days later), and I think it must have glazed the bores. That car was sluggish, thirsty and used a litre of oil every 1000 miles.

Was just thinking about this at the pump today.  Like with the performance pack its something that needs a more serious test to actually know if its worth it or not.

How about oil?  What do you guys like to use?

Castrol edge fully synthetic is what I would tend to use. If the oil consumption on the GTI is anything like my TT then you'll end up going through 3-4 litres a year 

What mileage were doing a year?

8k approximately

Your TFSI in the TT was 'consuming' a similar amount to my MK5 GTI and was a prime reason for me selling it. I say consuming as I never discovered where it was going.

My MK6 GTI doesn't use much in between 10k services and the TSI appears to fare better in oil consumption in comparison to the older TFSI engine.

VW quote a quart in 600 miles as within limits on TFSI...

As for new engines burning a bit of oil... probably the rings and cylinder walls bedding in.

I often thought this, no need to baby any engine...they are designed to do work.

It may be normal as in 'common' but there is no way it's normal as in 'acceptable'.  If after the first 1000 miles an engine is consuming oil there is something wrong with it and VW/Audi should be fixing or replacing.  You wouldn't accept it if the car let water in or it leaked fuel, why should you accept an engine that leaks or burns oil?  Its faulty, it won't give the advertised performance or efficiency, will wear out and break down fast, and will cost you more in running costs.

My opinion it is shoddy workmanship and should not be accepted.  Because it's expensive they should get away with this less not more!

Yeah I agree, it might be "common" (as much as you can believe people moaning about it in forums to be wholly representative), but that does not make it normal and acceptable.  Like I said, my Mk5 GTI loses hardly any oil at all between services.

There must be a problem.  Looking at is simplistically if oil is missing then there is a hole in your engine either depositing the oil on the floor, or in your cylinders.  There should not be holes in engines until they are pretty old in my experience.  That said I've mainly driven Fords, but I think it would be odd for VW to be building to a lower standard!

Yup, I don't disagree.  Just that forums inherently attract more complaints than compliments, so if you go looking for "problems" on forums, they can appear far more prevalent than they actually are.  Anyways, as you say, unless it's a rotary engine, engines shouldn't lose much, if any oil, and if they do the dealer should acknowledge the problem.

Back on subject, someone needs to open the filler cap and look at the sticker. Older MK5's stated 98, MK6 with the EA888 "world" engine stated 95.
