GTI Petrol
« on: 14 May 2013, 14:36 »
Getting ahead of myself here (have to do something to fill the wait ) but was wondering if anyone knows what the best petrol will be for the Mk 7?  I remember with the 6 that the super unleaded had no real effect on performance/consumption over normal unleaded, whereas with the 5 the super made a noticeable improvement.  Am guessing that with the 7 it will be the same??

Probably just answered my own question really given that 7 comes after 6....  :lipsrsealed:

Saying that, will you chaps be super-ing-it-up or sticking with the normal unleaded?!

I would always tend to go with a 99 Ron fuel even though its more expensive. I've only ever used vpower in my current car and although in theory it's supposed to give you a few more bhp it's not the main reason I buy it. It's mostly for the cleaning additives rather. Further down the line if you want to remap the car it's better going for a higher octane fuel

Personally I go for standard fuel, don't really fall for the whole "more bhp" and "better cleaning" marketing talk.  I'm sure it does, but to a demonstrable degree in reality?  There are plenty of other cheaper options you can use to clean out the injectors etc. without having to pay a few quid extra every time you fill up.

BTW, I've currently got a Mk5, and I've tried a few sequential runs of super in it.  I definitely would not say there was a noticeable improvement, in any aspect.

Was just thinking about this at the pump today.  Like with the performance pack its something that needs a more serious test to actually know if its worth it or not.

How about oil?  What do you guys like to use?

Castrol edge fully synthetic is what I would tend to use. If the oil consumption on the GTI is anything like my TT then you'll end up going through 3-4 litres a year

Any ECU that supports adaptive timing advance will benefit from higher octane fuel.

Power results are Dyno proven, hard to say on cleaning additives and better mpg though!

I only use 99ron in my mk6 apart from once when i couldn't find any where i was but you could definately tell the difference!

I normally use VPower as it's convenient but i find the car seems to run smoother on Tesco Momentum although for some reason i get more soot on my tailpipes when using the Tesco stuff??
