Could have had a manual standard out of the box GTi but I would have had to really pay for it in overall costs where as I get the GTD with DSG & 5 Door + additional options at minimal cost to me and with even more saving in running cost.

It it a lease/company car based on CO2?  If so, I guess it makes sense over a GTI.  Still not convinced by the running-cost savings relative to new car ownership in general, but each unto their own on how to justify something!

The company car C02 and petrol costs is purely why I've ordered a GTD.

I'd love a GTI but can't justify the extra running costs.

Additional cost for vehicle + a lot heavier C02 charges and then running costs make it a no brainer for Company Car folk - Would I like the red stripe and red tartan seats and all the red bits that shout GTi? Of course, there is the added prestige on that alone :)  but I know the GTD looks great too and that my driving experience is going to pretty damn good as basically getting pretty much same car with plenty of performance still on tap just with lower costs across board.

Exactly, i'm going from a 143bhp Mini to 184ps. So i'm getting a decent chunk of extra power and torque.

The GTD this time round looks almost identical to the GTI except the red line and the split exhaust at the rear. I've got Leather so the red tartan doesn't affect me.

I actually prefer the standard GTD alloys. All GTI's for the past 7 years seemed to have the same ones.

Yes it is, and if see the numbers there is a huge difference not just a few pennies and that is in comparison with a GTD that has DSG 5 Door Sat Nav Winter Pack and ACC added.

I like the GTi alloys they are classic GTi and if were going for a GTi would be something I would not even think to change as look to stay classic.

Like the Santiago also but would not put either over the standard GTD which when compare to many standard alloys across makes are very much are not the poor relation and best I seen for a long while on base spec.

Personally I don't like the 19" Santiago at all - way too busy, and being available on both, they lose out as a differentiator.  The standard GTI wheels look different enough to the Monzas of the past two generations, but retain that familiar, distinct look.

I was not a fan of the Monza's on the Mk5 and Mk6 as i didn't like dial effect however the new ones are sharper if that makes sense. I do like the santiago's but not enough to pay £1000

Yeah that makes sense.  Of the Monzas, I preferred the look of the 18" Shadows with the black insets, but these new wheels really look the part.  They definitely pass the "how do they look in that shop window as I pull away slowly?" test!

I think all  three wheel designs are pretty smart, and am really looking forward to seeing some additional dealer photos of the GTD alloys.

There's only 3% bik difference between the gti and gtd. plus given the mpg of the gti and the cheaper petrol costs over diesel the calcs work out at just 0.025p per mile extra for a 40% tax payer for the gti.
