Jeez that's ugly! VW seem to be going balls out for publicity on the mk7 GTI so sales of the mk6 must've been really crap.
Lets hope they bring the concept to GTI International like they did the W12 GTI.
As for the Lupo GTI, I borrowed a dealer demo one for the day once and it is still the best fun I've ever had in any car despite owning quite a potent remapped car myself at the time. It came from an ere where VW were building ever heavier dross and it was a breath of fresh air showing that the engineering side of VW still held a little bit of sway against the accountants and marketing guys. Hopefully the up! GT will have the same DNA.
