HI all, newbie here
« on: 09 May 2013, 13:44 »
Hi Chaps, thought I'd best introduce myself since just joining.

I'm in Bristol, and I DON'T have a golf.

However I used to have one and I want one again so thought I'd pop on.

Back in the late 90's I had a White 1987 8v so an early mk2 with quarter lights, small bumpers, and wipers that went the wrong way. At the time everyone was doing big bumper upgrades and putting on later doors and single wiper conversions. I kept mine original and even back then got comments that it was unusual to see a clean standard small bumper model.

This is the bit that really hurts now - I think it was a GTI Engineering one. It was badged as such and had an Ugly Zender boot spoiler - in keeping with what they did at the time, as the boot was rotten and I replaced the whole thing the spoiler ended up in a skip. I had no paperwork and at the time I didn't realize what it was I had. This was before "The Internet" so I couldn't Google it and find out.

Everyone that went in it couldn't believe how fast it went. Again in keeping with the period I remember blowing away an Astra 2.0 16v GTE the driver was gobsmacked at my little old 8v!

Needless to say in the couple of years I owned it I went from a clean licence to a driving BAN! so when I got my license back I sold it and got a BMW e30 instead to be a little less "noticeable".

So if you've seen "Gone in 60 seconds" I consider my Golf to be my Eleanor, and now (nearing my midlife crisis) I'm after second one - so I'll be keeping a close watch on the classifieds.

I'm into bikes and ride a zx9r everyday so get my thrills that way now. Have a sensible family estate car for weekends for me the wife, kids and dog.

So my aim is to get a usable toy, as original as I can and ideally an early quarter light model. It needs to be cheap so I'm expecting a fixer-upper - but not full on project car. And I don't have access to a trailer so looking for one with tax and test so it can at least be driven home.

Anyway, I'll try and keep an eye on things and hopefully learn from you guys so I don't buy a lemon when the time comes. And obviously if I've got anything to give back I will

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Ok so that's the other sad bit. This is before digital cameras and cameras in phones so unlike today where we capture everything I have no pictures just fond memories and a few good stories amongst my mates.
