Cold start problem

Now the car always start and runs fine it just takes at least 15 minutes or so till the temp gauge moves. Until the temp gauge warms up the fuel consumption is sh!t and I'm guessing the car still thinks its running cold. Where is the most likely weak link ?(new blue temp sender already fitted)

Did you reset the ECU when you fitted the sender?


Is it a genuine one?

The sender was £11 from CAF. When I tried resetting the ecu the engine would cut out with the sender unplugged.

was the car up to temp when you disconnected the sender?

Should not take 15 mins for temp guage to start to move my mk3 golf needle is near half way when covered 2 miles you have a partially open thermostat how long does it take to get to 90

I will time it this morning, the journey is short though and it may not even warm up by the time I arrive

My 8v gets to normal temperature in about 5 minutes. As stated your problem is a faulty thermostat. Easy fix if you have keep fit steering. Not so simple if you have power steering.  :smiley:

Well that's just awesome with my PAS, What's the solution? I tried timing the heat up time this morning but I arrived before the gauge started to move. This was a 7 min journey. I'm off tomorrow so if I Don't need parts then i can do it tomorrow.

If you have power steering there is just more to remove before you can get to the therostat housing. Like power steering pump and bracket. Do able but just more work. Get a new thermostat and seal,  I think it's an O ring.
