Coolant leak

I'm gonna tackle this coolant leak I have...it's sometimes REALLY bad..where it does nothing but piss out...then sometimes it does nothing..

Moved it off my drive to swap cars over on Sunday, literally 30 secs of movement...pissing out.

Today I drove it 60 miles to work and back...nothing! Not a drip..

Anyone on here had this problem, is it a common one? What did you do to fix?
I bought some radweld...but not sure if I should be using it, heard some bad things about it blocking all the little airways in the block.

I've tried looking under the car,



This was after the 30 secs of moving about, not exactly sure if its coming from the top of the engine...or bottom..was thinking of stripping the front down to have a better look..

Any help advice is appreciated

I would take the front off and see if you can locate it. Radweld could cause more harm than good! Plus if you find it you know you can fix it properly, it might be something simple you can never tell

Forgot to say the front is easy to remove 15mins tops if it your first time but I can't see you having any problems with that part of the task.

Yup as said take front bumper off. Very easy on mk4 just dont drop it  try having look from top engine too for any coolant puddles or marks in the engine bay on any pipework that normally is easy give away too

Aye, I thought id seen it dripping from the top...not entirely sure tho! It's coming off the road at end of month anyway, tax is up, will get as much done before I retax at end of August. Looking forward to it

looks similar to mine, I have a very slight leak from down the timing chain cover, have you overfilled the coolant bottle as it does have an overflow that if you overfill it obviously it will leak out the overflow.

looks like a leaking water pump to  me, its exactly where i was getting a leak a couple of weeks ago . was hard to tell where it was coming from until we put it on the lift.

It was fine when I got it, 2mths back now, then I remembered I changed the thermostat and coolant temp sensor, doesn't seem to be leaking where the 'stat is...could be a coincidence...it's annoying coz it sometimes doesn't leak, then another time it doesn't stop lol

Bet its the bottom corner of the rad, Mine went the same place.

Got a rad off carparts4less for £30. easy to fit aswell.

take a look at the corner of the rad with a torch. if its leaking you will see dry pink crystal parts where the coolant has dried.
