Reading on the motortrend GTi review thread it quoted "For the U.S., VW is currently saying that the 18-inchers will be standard, with no word on the 19-inchers. Summer tires will be an option and, after much prodding, VW admitted it will consider an optional cup tire".

I know it doesn't affect us here in Europe but does anyone know what they are referring to with reference to 'Cup Tyre?'.... They're surely not referring to a road legal semi slick are they?

If you can "afford" the time and hassle, then drive your new GTI to a tyre shop, swap to your preferred brand and sell the Dunlops as "new" on ebay.
Now = 2011 MK6 GTI - Reflex Silver
Past = 2006 MK5 GTI - Tornado Red and Solid Black

Interesting to note that the tyres on the photo Jimble posted are: Dunlop Sport Maxx GT

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=253381.0

My last VW also came with Dunlop's but as others have posted here there are all manner of brands slapped on at the factory.

We shall see.. All part of the anticipation..

It would seem no-one like Dunlops on here.

I just don't like replacing tyres that aren't worn out because they have fragile sidewall belting (compared to other makes I have had in the same tyre size).

Dunlop RT's are whats been in most photos. The GT's are what are on my tiguan and they have not suffered any sidewall bulge at all. Maybe they had a bad batch of dunlops and this caused sidewall failure. All in all I see it being a bit pointless changing brand new tyres just for the sake of it. You may as well get some use out them and you never know they may very well be a good tyre.

mcmaddy: bigger sidewalls on yours and being made specifically to take a few bumps might be what have saved your tyres, after all if a Tiguan is expected to take a lot more stick from surfaces than a Golf/Scirocco is if it actually goes off road then i'd expect the tyres to be a bit more robust.

Tried to phone Mick to make the changes - answerphone (he must have caller ID   :grin:).

Same sidewall on the tiguan as on the golf. Granted they are 255 40 19 but 40 sidewall the same.
