MK1 gti cutting out
« on: 13 October 2003, 10:40 »
MK1 1.8 8v gti karmann cab, '87. the prob is that most of the time it'll run lovely, but when you put your foot down (like after shifting etc) the engine will stutter then pick up revs, the other problem is that when i hit traffic, the engine when warm will simply cut out.
it'll start straight away, and as long as i keep the revs up it'll keep going, but after a while it just dies, wont rev and wont start again.

leave it for a while and it'll be fine!

have checked and replaced plugs (they werent getting fouled) and dizzy cap rotor arm etc have been replaced.

i'm about to replace the fuel pump as this has been whining for a while but any other ideas?

any suggestions gratefully recieved as i'm new to the fuel injection water cooled thing (aircooled i can deal with) and its pissing me off, just when you realise that there is such a thing as acceleration and speeds above 60mph the damn thing stops working!

Sounds like rust in the fuel system my friend!
Check your fuel lines and filler neck and change as required, then flush your tank out. ;)

I agree with 'old_boy'. Before you rush out and purchase a new pump, just try disconnecting the supply pipe to your pump and have a look in the inlet of the pump. There is an inlet filter screen which is one of your first lines of defense against cr@p coming from the tank. If that is blocked, which it could well be, that will not only help cure your problem, it will prevent your pump from working so hard and may stop the whining..........if its not too late.

cool cheers guys just going out to tackle it now!
the filler pipe was replaced a while back because of rusting through so i guess there might be a fair bit of crap in the tank, whats the best way of cleaning it and the fuel lines out?

cheers

i had a similar problem. i bought a new fuel pump relay which sorted it for a while but then ended up having to buy a new pump aswell; not sure if this really helps!
