Fluctuating rev counter?
« on: 30 April 2013, 09:18 »
Hi all - newbie here!

Recently purchased my first mk3 GTI 8V - after owning a VR6 for 4 years, it was becoming a b*tch to maintain and not suitable for daily driving so I had to downgrade  Picked up a very clean, 97' colour concept, 76k on the clock and full VW service history - really chuffed with it, however ive encountered my first little problem....

Over the past couple of weeks, its had this hiccup about 3-4 times. Driving along, ive noticed its usually either in 3rd or 4th gear, the rev counter will suddenly start going crazy, the oil light will flash on quickly and there's a slight dip in power. All of this only lasts a couple of seconds, it clears itself and drives normally after! It had a new cambelt kit fitted a few weeks ago and isnt due a service for another 5k miles.

Any ideas?
Thanks

What have you checked so far?
Any other (warning) lights coming on in the dash? How much does the rev counter drop down?

Get the fault codes scanned with VCDS, ideally also look at the measuring blocks and see if they are plausible. You could a fault with one of the rev sensors.
