dodgy idle pls help

Hi all I'm new here and just bought my first mk2 8v .I'm having a few Isues
With tick over   ..when run then stopped and started again my idle goes uptown 2000 rpm then takes around 30 seconds to settle back down to normal tickover ..it's not a cable prob something else .if anybody has any ideas that might help me sort this problem would be great ..:-)
