bmw immobilliser problem, anyone got any advice?
« on: 26 April 2013, 18:57 »
hi all,
im expecting most of you to be quite mechanically minded guys so im hoping you can offer some advice at least even if you dont know the answer to my specific problem.
I like a bmw 5 series, think its a 1991. It has a problem though. The battery went dead over the winter and the immobilliser wont turn off so the car wont start.
Ive read that you can bypass the immobilliser or get a chip or something. I have no idea.
Im just really wondering if this is something that someone could figure out fairly cheap or if its case of it having to be broken as its too expensive to fix it?
Anyone had this happen to a VW? how was it fixed?
Thanks

It wont be factory...

Take the cowls off from under the steering wheel get rid the alarm wiring ( more than likely the black wires )

Reconnect the wires that have been chopped.

Someone did a proper job on my old E36, had some under the steering coloum and some in the passanger footwell area, took me while to sort it :)

How do you know it's the immobiliser?
Does the engine actually turn over?
Or are there no dash warning lights etc, and the whole thing is completely dead?
Have you tried a new battery, and not the old one re charged,
I would start with a fresh battery, and leave it connected overnight before attempting to start the car...

hey thanks for the ideas, its for sale and i really like it but not sure whether i should just steer clear as i dont have shed loads of money.
im told its a sigma alarm and immobilliser and the guy said he thinks it is standard but not sure. he said it had a draining battery issue and he disconnected the battery for 3 weeks then connected it as he was going to use it and the immobilliser is stuck on, dash lights up but no turning over. he said he was told how to reset it but forgot and hasnt had the time or money to sort it out.

simpel enough to work on but all depends if you belive that it a broken immob or they broke the immob to disguise a f**ked engine
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
