When I was young I had a problem with my hip, where it was tilted to one side. This caused my right leg to be about 1.5cm shorter than my left leg. In the long run it would have caused me back problems. I did it all through my private healthcare in Spain as they actually diagnose you over there, and I was made to use a heel lift on all my footwear indefinitely. After a few years the hip started straightening out and my right leg started to match the left. It's been maybe 5 or 6 years now since I've worn the insole, my legs are now even and I have no back pain on a daily basis.
You say you shattered your femur. My uncle did exactly the same on a motocross accident, result? Shorter right leg. He has an extra sole about 1cm tall glued in every single right shoe he owns, and will have to use it for the rest of his life, otherwise he faces the same, back problems and a massive pimp walk.
