Best thing was though the plum copper forgot to record the speed he was doing so they had to let him off (after he asked for proof which they couldn't give him)

I saw an interview with a US cop who said the first thing they ask you when they pull you over is how fast you were going (as we all know).  He said they do this because most people, knowing they were doing 40 in that 30, say something like 33 or 34 thinking it looks better to admit to a small infraction.  This is basically a confession to breaking the law and takes no admin on the old bill's part.  He said never admit to anything, they often don't have proof or its just too much work for them.  The whole lecture was fascinating stuff actually, you tube has it under "don't talk to the police" or something like that.

That said, antagonising the fuzz might land you the maximum penalty, so denying something they obviously got you on is probably not the best strategy if you want to get away with a fine and no points for example.  I guess you gotta play it by ear.  From watching a episodes of traffic cops it seems you can get anything from an ok bloke to one who is gonna pull you over on a whim and then go over your motor with a fine toothed comb just to get you on something.

And as usual I've gone waaay off topic.

This is so true.  Never, ever admit to what speed you were doing.  And you don't have to antagonise them, just ask for proof.  If they can't give it to you then they can jog on!

And if you have a brand new shiny GTI then they can go round the car all they want as they're not going to find anything wrong with it!

Was at a party the other week and got speaking to a policeman (not traffic). He was telling me deny everything. Speeding....I don't think so officer. Caught on your phone (not that you should be doing that anyway)....I don't think so officer.
Then when they ask you to sign the document at the end, refuse as this is you basically admitting to the crime they have stopped you with which automatically triggers the points and fine.

If you don't sign, it means they have paperwork to complete and will be mighty p!ssed off with you and try and look for something wrong on the car but if you stick to your guns, they have to submit the info to the Procurator Fiscal. It is then up to them if they want to proceed but they are that busy they chuck a % out and you never hear from them again.
If the PF do proceed it goes to the option of you accepting the crime the same way you would be doing if you signed the document at the road side.

I've never tried the above but the policeman told me you have a 50/50 chance of getting off with it. Well you do here in Glasgow as the courts are too busy for trivial matters!!

Sorry for the off topic.

Haha, so speeding is OK but using your phone is not?!  I say in good humour of course, but the law's the law!  Choose to break it and suffer the wrath of the cop on duty!

Or spank it out of there and hope its the guy in the hyundi not the M3!  Mate of mine drives a C4 vette, was being followed by some coppers.  He got paranoid (wtf?) so he drove into a car park and when they followed he sped out leaving them standing.

Actually thinking about it don't do that.  My mate is crackers.  Especially if you drive a vette, not as if it would be hard for them to track him down.  The point was lost on him when I made it however.

Well they must have... and how many C4 vettes are there?  They must see him every few days!  I suppose technically he hadn't done anything, they were just being suspicious/bored.  He claims he sped of fast but if so they probably didn't get a radar him.

Anyway, what was this topic about again?

The % that has done 31 in a 30 must be close to 100% which to me is acceptable
Whereas using a phone must be a lot lower but certainly not acceptable
Anyway I'm way off topic so "As you were....."

Just found some information in the Self study manual on the Radar sensor. At least it looks like the glass piece is removable, however as it also contains a heating element, it's not going to be cheap to replace (assuming you can even purchase it on it's own) ?

Current price on ETKA for the whole device is £926.10 inc vat

The plastic front cover bit is £2.41
