Puzzling earth issue
« on: 24 April 2013, 21:02 »
Got a strange one here. I've just got my 8v back into its bay after a strip down, clean up and new head gasket. All is going well except an issue with starting. Ive traced the issue back to the ECU ground wire. Normally it attaches to the corner stud on the rear of the rocker cover along with one other wire. However, the car will not start. I tried connecting a temporary jumper wire direct to the battery -ve and still no joy. Strangely though, if i disconnect it from the head altogether and leave it connected to the battery (via the jumper wire) it starts instantly. A simple solution you might say, leave it off the head with the additional wire on the battery. I hate wires though and there's enough of 'em already in the bay. Gotta have things nice and tidy  I should point out that the gearbox earth and body earth are present and have been cleaned. The car runs well and all other electrics work fine.

Any ideas?

a thought .. although you have cleaned the earth's up , try with a multi metre measuring the earth led resistance , as the braided type leads resistance gets quite high when they fill up with crud
