mk2 oil sump on 16v?
« on: 24 April 2013, 13:00 »
i read somewhere on here that the sump pan from the mk2 will fit the 16v, is this true??

i hit a lump yesterday and had oil isssing everywhere so believe the sump is cracked, although i havent been able to check this yet.

called vw and they want 120 somthing for a new sump and another 15 for gasket, + vat on top of it all.

but read the mk2 will fit and is stronger?? can anyone confirm this is true as the mk2 one is only 33 + vat

thanks

The steel sump from the 'big block' Mk2 fits on the ABF 16V engine.

You will need to use different (shorter) bolts as the alloy sump is thicker, meaning the bolts are longer.

Alloy sump can crack if it gets hit, the steel sump is likely to dent instead, which I guess is safer.

Well the standard 16v sump is aluminium, brittle and will crack/break if you hit it. Hence why on mine I have the steel sump from my old 8v engine. Just go to a scrapyard and find a 1.8 or 2l 8v and get the sump and bolts.

cant get to the scrapyard without a car :(
ill have to cycle to the dealers

so if i order a mk3 8v sump and gasket and bolts, it will all be straight swap over??

Also try GSF / ECP

Though surprised you don't know anyone who could take you to a scrappy.
Scrap yard may not want to let you have just the sump though as they won't be able to sell the 8v engine complete.

The dealers won't have it on the shelf so it will be 2 days at the earliest (as it's after 13:00 now)

When you said cycle for some reason this image popped in my head:

It was the Billy doll from the Saw films on a trike.

Go for the VW parts then, as it's a significant cost save versus the alloy sump

Try ECP they should be able to supply the parts and will be cheaper than the dealer

Nobody bother considering the oil pick up pipe?
It's different on the KR to ABF...so unless you change that too, you are risking oil starvation because it picks up from a different part of the sump.
Just saying...
