revo stage 1 - it is worth it?
« on: 24 April 2013, 10:10 »
I was considering revo stage 1 on my 10/2009 gti (dsg) and would like to get your opinion before spending all this money on it.  Is it really worth it in terms of (a) extra power/performance, (b) torque, (c) consumption?  Does it make that much of a difference to how the car rides/feels/responds/consumes petrol that 700 euro is money well spent?

Any input, positive and negative, esp from people who have it tried and tested, will be much appreciated.

I have REVO stage 1 on my ED30. I paid £500 so about the same and it has been well worth it. I also had some Tarox performance discs and pads fitted at the same time.

Yes of course I was expecting the power gain but was not expecting the way the car completely changed. The charachter of the engine is different, it sounds better and idles smoother. It is quite happy dawdling in town traffic and cruising. Its far too quick to say that is should have been this way from the factory but the driving experience is so much better you have to think that VW leave a lot of headroom in their engines.

REVO is supposed to be an aggressive map, not sure what that means, I suppose the gains are better than APR or Superchips but then the downside is the wear on components.

Its much quicker off the line but the real perfomanc gain is mid range, its still surprises me how it reacts like a bullet from a gun and just disappears down the road with me clinging to the steering wheel.

So no negatives from me, fuel consumption is even better !

If there are any downsides then it could be that Stage 1 is just the start of a slippery slope of mods. Exhaust, Air Intakes etc. I have decided to stop where I am. In my view Stage 1 has completed the car.

The day I had the Map done I was heading home and was being followed by a black Golf MK6 GTD with DRL's and foglights on. It was 2pm in the afternnon and sunny so you know the type !. He ( looked like an estage agent ) proceeded to glue himself to my bumper for several miles. Joining the M1 on the slip road he was still attached to my car so when I checked that the motorway was clear I could not resist trying my new toy for the first time. Within seconds I was at three figures and still going, looked in my mirror and I could still see his DRL's and fog lights way, way in the distance. Very childish and very satisfying ! I was laughing out loud for miles. Was even tempted to let him catch up so that I could do it again.

Very helpful review mate, seems like you are really enjoying it.  I am also not interested in having stage 2 as that would mean the missus kicking me out the house   Would you say Stage1  wears down specific components faster compared to a  factory GTI?  I don't want to be paying this amount of money now and then having to pay more and more money on components that wore down.  Did you notice any such abnormalities and increased costs compared to before you installed it?

Have not seen any abnormalities or wear yet. I don't expect the front tyres to last 20,000 miles though !

That's interesting, didn't know you can actually do the upgrade by yourself.  Well, there are numerous options to choose from, I was interested in Revo because there is a rep in Cyprus that applies the upgrade.  Not sure about other manufacturers.

Whilst I can't comment on the 'revo' in isolation, I had the Mk5 mapped and letterly the Mk6.

In my opinion it makes them the car it should always have been. Fantastic power, but the mid-range is phenomenal. Motorway driving can be hilarious as you can surprise a lot of folk without having to hunt up and down the gearbox.

The Mk5 did 55k miles with no map related issues.

The Mk6 hasn't done many miles yet

Wear is probably related to how you drive it, you don't get something for nothing. Tyre-wise there was more wear, but not alarmingly so. Economy wise, they still did/do high 30's on a run. Cane it and it suffers.

With a responsible re-mapper you should only ever see the advantages.

so you are saying that 2 different remappers can do the remap in a different way?? I thought it was standard procedure no matter who applied the upgrade.

Maps vary massively. A lot of the respected tuners spend an increasing amount of time putting right poor maps.

Use a trusted mapper, with a reputation. Many are agents and will use a developed map. Avoid the back street heroes.

I always use the same guy, he has done a number of cars for me and friends over the years and I trust him. It gives real piece of mind. Ask friends, ask on forums, you will get an idea who to avoid.
