20vt cranks but wont start
« on: 21 April 2013, 21:09 »
hi guys ive got a agu in a mk3, all was well im running oem ecu, ko3s, 007p,fmic,silicone tip,2.5 custom downpipe

i had a problem with the car cutting out whilst driving, then instantly starting again, thought it was a wiring issue as the clocks would reset. however my battery died the other day and when i replaced it the  car started and ran for about 10 seconds when it died with what sounded like a big dump of pressure, and wont start now not even trying just turn over and over. ive checked fuel, spark and compresion and all seem good so plugged it into vcds, and it came back with internal control module rom error. ive done some research and found that this is a ecu problem but can only see that it affects chipped ecus and as far as im aware mine is not.
im really hoping someone can shed some light as a new ecu plus immob defeat is gona be an expensive experiment. :undecided:

any help gratefully recieved, you lot aint let me down yet
cheers

thanks mate just wondering if the chip is fubar or its the whole ecu, or if anyone knows which part the de immo bit is on ie the chip or the ecu.
question is if its the chip could i replace it and the ecu still be de immo?

got a feeling im clutching at straws with this one but worth an ask :undecided: :undecided:

update!
just done a compression test and got nothing on all cylinders,
so stripped the head off the car and found the exhaust valves stuck open which has marked the top of the pistons.
just trying to find out if their are any timing marks to check relating to syncing the cams?

found the timing marks all correct but 7 of the 8 valves are bent
so im guessing the timing belt has to have slipped a tooth as the chain tensioner is a ok and the cams are still in sync,
plz let me know if anyone else has any other ideas or if im overlooking something,
but basically my heads telling me this is the only possible cause lol
cheers

Id have checked the timing on the belt prior to taking the head off.

Cams are 16 links between the 2 little notches on the gears.

It definitely sounds like the belt has jumped a couple of teeth, is there any damage on the belt, I.e has something dropped in there whilst its been spinning to cause the tooth jump?
If not then I would say the tensioner has given up. A seized water pump would also cause this is check that too.

Update.... Stripped the engine down and found that the crank sprocket was missing its locating bit it had completly sheered meaning all timing looked bang on but the crank had spun on its own bending the valves on the way back up!! Brill!!! So replaced everything put it all back together and ran fine other than a metalic knocking on idle, could increse revs and the noise stopped but as soon as u release power again the noise returned??? Stripped the rocker off thinking it was tensioner related or tappits or cam to cam timing and all seamed well, then replaced oil pump and cleaned out pick up pipe rebuilt it and still same noise so then decided to buy another complete head, dropped that on and still the same noise, meankng obviously my head, cams, tensioner all ok!! Then checked for play in the crank and shells snd pistons and eveything but still all seamed fine????? Finally stripped gearbox off and found that the flywheel had been rubbing on the back side and to my astonishment found that a couple of the bolts were sheered so replaced all bolts and im in the process of rebuilding it AGAIN! Ill keep u posted on if ive solved the problem, just thought a run through might help others with simular issues and save them the time and money ive lost
