Keyless entry & Diesel engines

Just wondering how the stop/start engine button would work with Diesel engines? Normally, with a key, you have to wait a few seconds for the glow plugs symbol to disappear before you fire the engine. How does this work if you opted for keyless entry and get a button instead?

Does it just delay the engine firing sequence on diesels until the glow plugs are ready? Or does it just fire up instantly like a petrol engine?

I'm considering adding it as an optional extra, that's if I'm not too late.

Not keyless, but I'm guessing that it would be like the push the "key" to start in my Passat.
 
On really cold starts, no amount of pressing the key will start the car until it's good and ready. So I guess it decides when the heater plugs have warmed up enough. I'm making that sound like it's a problem and takes for ever. In reality it's about a 2-3 second delay.

Well on my diesel Rocco, if I turn the key to start immediately on getting it, the car just delays the start sequence until the glow plugs have finished then automatically starts the engine.

I would guess it would be the same on the MK7, i.e. foot on brake, press the "start" button once then a few seconds later the engine springs into life (or immediately if glow plugs are not required following a warm start).

Your Rocco sounds the same as my A1.
On cold mornings if I turn the key to start straight away nothing happens and it fires up a couple of seconds later.

You don't have to hold the key round in that position though. I just turn it, let go then put my seatbelt on and half way through this it just fires up. 

I suppose it saves on the glow plugs as every other diesel I've had, I've forgot to wait until the light is out!!

Had an interesting reply from my VW dealer on this question. This is what they said:

"With keyless entry [on diesel engined cars] once you approach the vehicle the glow plugs are already pre-heating in anticipation of you pressing the starter button. So, by the time you've sat down and buckled up, the glow plugs have pre-heated so when you press the starter button the engine will start straight away (just like a petrol engine)."

If the above is true I think that's pretty cool engineering and I'm relieved I made the right choice

I wonder will the Start/Stop button be on the drivers side of the centre console or passenger side? All the photos are of LHD cars with the button next to the driver. I expect VW won't bother moving it, as they haven't done with the other buttons.

I saw a GT with keyless entry at a dealer and I'm sure the button was on the driver's side.

It's on the drivers side, i'm curious about the way the ignition is turned on when you touch the handle, will the dial staging be done before you get in the car?

What is dial staging?  Not heard of this one before.

It's where the needles sweep to the end of their travel on the speedy and rev counter and return to zero, usually when the ignition is turned on. Do the GTD and GTI both have this as standard? My Roc didn't but it was an easy VCDS update to activate it, amongst other things.
