weber carb issues 1.3
« on: 18 April 2013, 16:00 »
hi,

so i've done what everyone has suggested since getting the car and fitted a weber (32/34 dtml) to my 1.3, the problem now is that it will only idle with the manual choke pulled out, doesn't matter how slowly i put it back in once the car has warmed up it refuses to idle without it. the car dies when coming to a stop if i have it any less than fully out.

i have attempted to adjust the idle and mixture screws, is it best to do this with the manual choke pulled out or pushed in?

any help greatly appreciated

Choke is only for cold start u dont adjust air and fuel ratio with the choke on as u dont drive your car around with the choke on im not to familar with carb systems but it seems ur car isnt getting enough fuel to stay alive if you had to much fuel the engine would rev without u pressing the accelerator my suggestion is to richen the mixture to keep the engine alive  then work your way down to a nice idle but i reccomend doing this at a garage as a 4 gas anyliser is handy to have to get a good fuel to air ratio

Hi mate, hope I can help with this.

Firstly I have to assume that the engine only started doing this once the carb was replaced for a proper one
Secondly is it only idle you struggle with? so if you were to start the engine with the choke out and then drive away, let the engine warm a little bit and then push your choke back in does the vehicle drive under load ok or is there problems all round when the choke is in the off position?

Check, can you hear any vacuum leaks? (hissing sound, like a compressed air leak),Did your carb come with a new mounting flange to the inlet manifold
Mixture could be an issue as mentioned by xion and yes adjustment has to be made when the engine is up to operating temperature and the choke is pushed fully in/off, so judging by your problems idling it will be difficult to do this

So I recommend trying to adjust the mixture screw (whilst counting all of your turns so you can take it back to the original setting you had it if necessary) do this whilst the engine is warm but not running and with the choke fully in/off  and so every quarter or half a turn of the screw attempt start up with no choke and see if it makes any difference.
Just so you know a gas analyser is best for setting up your emissions but you can get a very accurate set up by removing your spark plugs and cleaning with a soft wire brush then refitting and using the vehicle for a day or two, then remove your plugs again to inspect the colouration of the burn on the filament of the plug.
Your looking for a nice light brown colouring, if you have that and your happy with the way she runs then you know your somewhere close. You could also remove your plugs now and check what colour they show to give you an indication as to weather shes too rich or too weak, the darker the colour the richer - the lighter the weaker.
I have done this a few times after replacing carbs and they just require a lot of constructive fiddling to set up!
Good luck!

Sounds like the primary idle jet is blocked.
Take it out and clean it.

You have set your mixture to that engine first as your new carb will not come already set up!
Start with routine maintenance rather than randomly checking other mechanical possibilities.

Get the engine hot with the choke out.

You say it wont run with choke in fully, so push it in slowly, as much as possible before stalling. Adjust the mixture screw out (anticlockwise) and the revs will increase.

Continue with this until it runs with the choke in fully.

Turn mixture back in until revs drop, then adjust idle screw until about 850 RPM. Turn mixture in until revs drop, readjust idle to 850 RPM. Repeat as often as required, then when no further adjustments required, turn mix in half a turn, RPM should stabilise at 800RPM. Then, drive it 1000 miles, and readjust as necessary. Once vaguely happy (drive everywhere with an appropriate screwdriver to adjust mixture/idle as you use the car) adjusting as you drive it, (as needed, if at all) take it to a friendly mechanic, and ask to read the CO. Should be about 2%. They may charge you a small amount for this?

OR

Take it to a garage now, and try and set CO to 2% at 800RPM. I found this tricky though, and it does need to be driven for a while to wear it in.

Mixture is on RHS as you look at it (at the bottom) Idle is on the back, has a spring around it.
