I realise that there have been numerous threads on the internet about this, but was wondering if anyone will know what will have busted in my case. I leaned on a partly opened back window and it moved down just a bit, and since then has never gone back up by itself. I can open the window normally but it will not go up..(motor works) I can pull it up by hand and it will drop a few mm and stay there...

The other window on the other side (which was like that when I bought it) will not go down or up and the window physically moves when you press the regulator.

Anyway here is the most important question of the day...i may get some of the parts from a MK3 3 door golf and was wondering what parts are interchangeable with the rear doors of a 5 door golf...(i mean the whole window regulator along with all the motor tension wires, clips etc...(i suspect a clip has busted or it has fallen off...)
(please tell me that the whole thing is interchangeable and I will be very very happy)

I have no idea what has broken, but will post pictures tomorrow at some point and hope someone can tell me what parts need to be replaced...put back into place....or if I can use some ties to fix everything...:)

It looks pretty straight forward to remove the door covers as I see no external screws...the post for that on here is very good..:)

The rear windows on a 5 door are completely different runners from the fronts. 3 and 5 door front windows use the same mech and runners though im 99% sure. And 3 door rear windows dont go up and down, they're sealed. So that answers that question!
Just find a 5 door breaking ad and offer the guy some cash for the rear runners and motor, take about half hour to fit.

ok took door card off. window goes down normally. can't lift window though by itself. it will not allow the window to move up when all the way down. i am trying to figure out how it lifts the window and reached behind the blac metal steel protector where the tension wire is. i can feel the wire moving up when i press the switch to close the window but window doesn't go up. if i press it only for a bit the window will partly go up if i move it by hand, but not all the way. if i hold the window button long enough the wire will go and then stop and i can lift the window the whole way up by hand. it goes down by a few mm or so overnight. so the tension wire and motor are ok.   i can't see anything ( other people have mentioned plastic cogwheels etc. anyone have an idea if what is wrong? it us as if the window has slipped off beliw some sort of lifter but i don't know how to get it back on.  :( i am stumped...

There are 2 plastic blocks that hold the window to the mech the motor spins and winds up the cable to there tight then it lifts the glass from my understanding from what your saying is from under load the plastic cog wheels inside the mech are slipping now lower the window mechanism now loosen the two metal glass holders and then lift the window up and get a mate or use something to hold the window up at the high point to how it looks when closed now operate the window switch if you can see the window mech moving up and down you know your problem is the plastic wheel or the motor try then if no results take the window mechanism out and inspect it and if you don't notice anything unbolt the motor from the mech and check the plastic cog

Sorry plastic blocks means metal window clamps

Thanks for the reply...the window will go down and I can hear the motor running. The cables tense up both when I flick the switch down then up...I can reach behind the black metal bar that the window bracket is attached (it is a very small space between it and the window) and feel the tension wire moving down when the window goes down and feel it moving back up but the window does not go up...I will make a video of it tomorrow as today the video I shot you can only hear the motor whirring which is kind of useless and see the window going down but not up...

I was just wondering if the back windows have one clip that controls the lowering while the other controls the raising???Where is the other clip as I can only find one behind the pillar that is visible...

aha I have sort of figured it out..i think...the metal part on the tension wire (the sort of wider part..a few mm thicker) is the part that should lift the window up..it should somehow be attached to the window bracket and lift it...I have seen the repair for this and will give it a go...I wonder if it is possible to thread the tie in without taking the window regulator out of the car....it might be possible with a bunch of tweezers and surgical scissors so will give it a try...:)

clips which attach to the wire have broke. 100%

Undo the window mech from the glass. 2x 10mm bolts. sounds like its not attached anyway.

Undo the window mech. 4 10mm bolts front one or 3 bolts rear. Undo plug to motor. Wiggle it out.

If youre lucky, the little metal prong which holds the small "stop" on the cable might have just disformed and popped out.

What you can do then is use a small cable tie to fasten the cable to the holder, window should now raise up again.

If the white clip has shattered, its new mech time. can pick them up for about £25.

Hope this makes sense. Best thing to do is to just get the mech out & check.

I love how we have exactly the same problems!!

Happened last year for me and so easy to fix. I used some big suckers to hold the window up instead of taking it out (which is fairly easy). Just take it out of the clamp. The whole window mech comes out with the 3 bolts and the repair can be done with a ziptie and butt connector the other side to give it something to pull against.

yeah it makes you wonder if the cars were designed to fail on certain aspects...but at least all the fixes are fairly easy to do...not like on the newer models!

lol cars are designed to fail say for instance mercedes factory will test a switch with a robotic switch pusher. mercedes will use a material for that switch that will fail after 600 presses . why only make money for the sale when they can make money on parts and labour old cars were built to last newer cars arent made with the same quality as older cars

got it apart ant a small minute plastic part is broken that most likely raises the window by being lifted by the tension wire. one tie snapped whilst raising the window so i have put a new tie in. will most likely snap at some point in the future, but working for now.
