Maybe the new windscreen blocks out the phone signal hence why you have to get an integrated aerial!! That would make sense.

Yep, that makes total sense, but only if those who only want Advanced Phone Prep get told they must spec it with the Heated Screen (which is crazy).  There is a separate shark fin aerial on the roof for stuff like that, and should not rely on an a phone aerial embedded into a heated screen.  There is either more to it technically, or is just a scam.

Also, what is wrong with the signal passing though the unheated side windows?  Anyway to block a microwave signal you need a Faraday cage, which it sounds like the new windscreen is specifically designed to be less like than the old one.

Same here, no way I'm having a cradle screwed into the dash that will never get used.  If it's a lay-down cradle in the arm-rest or something, that's different

Well my mole at VW customer services....alight Jimmy, has just called back after mentioning to him about the climate windscreen when speaking to him earlier. He said after investigation with marketing, that it is indeed due to the additional radiated interference that would disrupt the phone signal in the car, and so it therefore needs to be routed through the cars aerial (which is part of the upgraded phone package). So a chocolate fish to p3asa

However, when asked why on the Irish price list for the GTi/GTD, it seems to allow you to spec the heated windscreen on its' ow, in fact the Irish price list just says:

HEATED AND INFRARED REFLECTING WINDSCREEN  €350
Heated laminated glass
Note: Available from week 15/13

To that, he didn't unfortunately have an answer ?

I just wonder why the phone aerial can't be integrated as part of a nav package though?  If you use the Irish configurator, and spec a heated screen, it says you need either the phone prep or pro nav.  Now, I'd rather not have to pay pro nav money as I'm not bothered about nav either, but I'd consider the basic nav over phone prep any day.

Anyway, it is what it is...although I don't see how it can render a phone useless.  It should be up to the person buying the car whether they want to take that risk or not.

Me neither.  Something isn't adding up here.  Perhaps its just a VW UK vs VW EIRE difference of opinion... that still makes one (or both) of them wrong though!

There is no longer any need for a clumsy mobile phone holder on the dashboard, and there is no critical exposure to radio waves in the interior of the vehicle.

And also for those people like me with iPhones, they don't support Remote Sim Access Profile.
