I believe that the light in question is also linked to the fluid level, check and make sure the plunger on the cap is not stuck down.
my abs pump went dead i had no handbrake light come up (not that every symptom is the same) take the advice from above about the level also have a look at the hand brake switch but the abs issue probarly is seperate from the hand brake light dont quote me on that but im sure its has no link to the abs system as the pump only takes information from the wheel sensors

No worries, I had the same issue with mine.

Might be worth checking the handbrake switch and wiring

Thanks bud :afro: and thanks to everyone for their helpful replies too
well looked into it earlier tonight and removed the airbag/abs warning light module and unclipped apart so as to check for the suggestion of the abs bulb being blown (thanks for that advise ) and when plugged in airbag bulb illuminates and no the abs one doesn't  so after getting the part number and not even ringing vw as i know they can be up to £100 !! i found a 6 pin unit on e-bay  1H2 919 235T mine ends in s but apparently 'T' replaces this part,so will use the bulb unit from that  also re-scanned tonight for fault codes after wiping them and here's whats come up:-

Well looks like the airbag code was due to battery disconnection and only one sensor seems to be at fault so will fit a new sensor and see what happens

I hope its just a sensor to mate i done the same as you i bought another light unit from ebay i unsoldered the airbag bulb and soldered it onto my unit you will be better of with the airbag bulb as mk3 are more known to have abs issues than airbag so it wouldnt have spent alot of time illuminated and should last longer

Well Fitted two new front sensors and found one reason why the fault, upon removing the nsf wheel i had a quick look over and realised the tip of the sensor was shot and there was No abs ring only the 3 securing bolts   so after some thought i ended up at a breakers to find a new bottom hub  so the sensor change took longer than planned and cost more  driveshaft was a pain to slide out all finished and....................hey ho abs light and handbrake warning light still on after roadtest  scan showing nsr is faulty now ffs!

Looks like still a dodgy ecu. I think every one you will buy will have some kind of fault. Usually it's common to have rear sensor fault
