Discover Nav Pro
« on: 14 April 2013, 09:13 »
Hi all. Just looking through the price lists and standard MK7 catalogue, and when it comes to the discover Nav pro upgrade, I notice there's no longer any mention of it acting as a wifi hotspot. In some of the original promo material from last year, under the full description of the Nav pro it ended with;

"In addition, the Discover Pro also operates as a WLAN hotspot to enable Internet access for a WLAN-capable mobile device (smart phone or tablet)."

As there's no longer any mention, do we assume this has been dropped or yet another example of VWUK getting the specs wrong. I ask as I'm also considering an Audi A3, however the Audi Connect system also isn't available in the UK, so was wondering if it was something to do with UK regulations that's preventing it from being sold here ?

Audi connect is on my A1 and has wifi hotspot so not sure what the issue would be.

I'm not sure it's a big deal anyway. My android phone has a wifi-hotspot in it, and I presume this is a standard feature on smartphones these days, so if your kids need access in the back, just do it through your (free data plan) phone!

Yeah that makes sense. The only negative there is, the phone is using its own built in aerial so might not pull in enough strength whereas when you activate the "carphone" profile, it uses the cars aerial and the signal is much stronger.

I hit a patchy bit on the way to work in terms of signal and my call used to always drop if just using bluetooth. Now when I use the carphone its perfect. But I would agree its not such a big deal.

Apparently if the Nav unit is on and you have Keyless entry, and you open the drivers door but the engine is still running the Nav will switch off.  That could be a bit annoying...

Not sure if the same applies to the basic nav or the ... whatever the non nav thingy is called.

EDIT:
By nav I mean the entire unit.  So it will stop navigation, music, bluetooth etc etc...

I think if you leave the engine on an d get out of the car so the key gies out of range it will all switch off.

I didn't know that but it makes sense.  I think I'm referring to something else though.

VW don't seem to want to give out the Nav manual for free, but Skoda do and I'm guessing their systems are not that dissimilar.  Here is the relevant line in the Skoda manual:

Quote
If your vehicle is fitted with the KESSY system, the unit will switch off automatically
after the engine is turned off and the door is opened. If you open the driver's
door before switching off the engine, the unit will also switch off.

Which seems to imply to me if you hop out to use a bin, ring a door bell, open the boot, pick something up etc etc.... or even if you just open the door to have a look at the kerb, be handed a bag, kiss your wife goodbye... then it will turn off.  Ok, its not like this would happen all the time, but I do periodically open the drivers door while leaving the engine running, even if I don't get out.

I can't see a reason why the unit would need to switch off if the engine is still running.

So if my car has a reversing camera and parking sensors, I'll have nice images and graphics on the screen to help me do a manoeuvre.  I then pop the door open for a second to see how close I am to the kerb and the screen shuts off?

why would you want to open the door to check? you've got a camera, sensors and a dipping wing mirror on the nearside.

The mirror dips on the passenger side, so if I was parking next to a kerb on the drivers side I might want to pop the door open.  I suppose my point is that there is a perfectly normal situation that could lead to your screen shutting off because of the way kessy is wired up.  Doesn't sound ideal.
