The R32 was and always will be a lazy man's car with hugely deceptive point to point pace which got you to

your destination cool and relaxed.  A very underwhelming car, like all MK4 Golf's TBH, the only thing it did well

was the noise.

Mk3 abf handles better than a mk2

The simple fact is its lighter. Get a mk3 to same weight and it will be faster.

Mk2 Golf is lighter, reread what Tweed posted, get a mk3 to weigh less and that is half the battle.

Or just drop an ABF in a mk2 (which would be my choice)

ahh i get you now so the mk3 handles better but the lightness of the mk2 makes it faster round the track and putting a abf in makes it even better

R32's are pathetic

had this convo last night with ben, when my engine was standard 225bhp (S3 engine) it absolutly murdered a mk5 R32 and the driver tried about 5 times, i said at the time to ben, his VR6 would have kept up with the R32 EASY

id never ever have a R32 or the engine..  unless it was turbo'd up

and as for Mk2 and mk3 debate

mk2 aerodynamics are diabolical over 100 mph, the ideal shell is mk3 if you are going for BIG power, the extra bit of weight helps traction and the aerodynamics are good on the mk3

BTW I love MK2's

This thread is daft, for a start it is in the mk3 section so will always be mixed views.

Out of the factory a mk3 GTI or VR has very poor handling against a mk2, even a mk4 GTI standard is better.

R32 will or should be quicker off the line thanks to the better traction and I still fail to see how a mk3 VR can be consided a better car.

Horses for courses really, depends on really what you want from a car.
