Towtruck Shame UPDATE New Engine
« on: 12 April 2013, 15:44 »
I've just had to have my 1year old Edition 35 dropped at the dealers by tow truck. Was accelerating past 60mph when something popped and I lost all power.
I'm glad I took out recovery when the VW one finished 2 weeks ago.

It's never nice to see your car on the back of a tow truck

After reading the thread about faulty belt tensioners I'm thinking that may have happened to mine. It sounded like it was rattling a bit when I started the engine.
I'll let you know what the dealer says

Not with the 35 they have a belt and different tnensioner system.
You can really hear the rattle when the manual tensioner starts going faulty on the 35.
Unlike the hydrolic one on the normal  GTI which tensions back up with oil pressure and then destroys mashed pistons to valves.

It's more like a pipes popped off or the turbo gone pop.

Thanks for that Snoopy. I hope it is just a pipe, I'm not looking forward to driving the courtesy tractor (Diesel mk7) for too long.

Just spoke to the dealer. They reckon a bearing in the water pump broke which caused the cam belt to shred which caused the pistons to meet the valves and it all went plink, plonk, bang.

A new engine is on back order as none are available at the moment.

Not only did the dealer say they had never heard of the water pump failure issue, VW UK said the same to me on the phone today. I contacted them via Facebook and Twitter to see if I could rush things along a bit cos I'm getting really bored of the 1.2ltr Bluemotion they gave me.
After reading some of the forums around the world it sounds like its only customers who have bought Volkswagens with the dodgy water pump know about the issue, everyone of them was told by the dealer and vw head office 'never heard of that'
