Non starter
« on: 11 April 2013, 19:21 »
Hi, need some help getting to the bottom of my non-starting gti.
The day after doing a 500+ mile round trip last wknd I drove to the shops (started fine) grabbed some things came out to the car 5mins later to start and nothing.
So far i've done the following

Checked battery voltage : 12.4v
Checked voltage of trigger wire : 12+V
Bridged starter and that spins
Cleaned wires and terminals on starter and earth strap from battery to gearbox
The car bump started and drove back from the shops fine so im getting fuel and spark
Ive tried jump starting it just to be sure on the battery, no joy there.

What else can i check?

Ignition switch? Bypass it to see if it starts can't remember how I did mine
I think I ran a wire from the coil and wired it to the heater live with a switch on
And it started. Changed ignition switch problem sorted

Worth a try

I've now changed the ignition switch and thats not helped so i took the starter off again and re-tested it and now i'm thinking it is the starter after all.
Tomorrow i shall buy a new starter and if that doesnt work on sunday i shall buy some petrol and a box of matches!!

Now sorted, it was the starter motor after all.
New one fitted this morning and fired straight up.
Happy days.
