Mk3 16v caliper Clearing issues!!!!
« on: 10 April 2013, 23:15 »
Right, I've just bought some bbs rs reps for my 16v, as I'm sick of trying to run my wide-ass borbets daily on wiltshires god- aweful roads.
They're 7.5x17 all round, offset 35, 205/40/17 tyres (slight stretch) and I'm having trouble clearing the brake calipers up front. I had the same problem with the borbets and With spacers they rub like mad on the arches!

I know loadsa people run these wheels on low mk3s, without arch work. It's driving me mad!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

There are many different et's to one wheel.

You need a spacer how big I don't know. If it rubs then you got two options. Buy same wheels with bigger et. 45 maybe with a 10mm spacer making it et35.

Or roll your arches.

Roll the lips flat, it's easy on the front as theyre only single skinned. Had to do this to mine and also running max negative camber to stop hitting the arches with my Dare DRB wheels. I needed 15mm spacers to clear my calipers!

He's having problems with a aftermarket wheel clearing the caliper due to the design. It has nothing to do with what et it is.
Could be et50 and he would still have same issue.

Thanks for the help guys! I was a bit mistified with the problem considering the high offset, but tweed is right, it's got more to do with the dished design of the wheel.

I have an arch roller, so will give it a go although I've heard from phil at 'arch enemy' the mk3 arches are hard to roll smoothly coz of the metal tabs where the arch trims were originally attached, anyone have any experience in this area?

Et 35 should clear fine unless he is running bigger brakes.

I'm please somebody understands!!

I presume the wheels were designed around the early 'Girling 280mm' calipers and don't clear the 'ATE 288mm' calipers.

Sadly, spacing any 7.5" ET35 wheel outwards is going to give you problems...not to mention make it drive worse.
How much clearance do you need?
Will 3mm do it?
Or 5mm?

You could drop back to early GTI front brakes: 280mmx20 and Girling calipers. They offer more clearance.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Early MK3's were ET35. Can't remember which wheels they were. Later wheels changed to ET43
