Done some digging today for the MOT on my de-catted 150 TDI.

I spoke to a guy at VOSA myself this morning about it getting through an MOT. Thought it’d help some out out if I passed on the info.

The guy referred me to this link, which is the online testing manuals for classes 3,4,5 and 7: -

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/doitonline/bl/mottestingmanualsandguides/mottestingmanualsandguides.htm

If you look at Section 7.1, it states that ‘On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic convertor’. This relates to petrol engines, as a diesel is subject to a smoke test.

So, ‘no cat fitted’ is not a reason for failure on a diesel, as long as it meets the smoke test criteria, which is in Section 7.4.

It states in Section 7.4, reasons for failure on emissions as: -

For vehicles first used on or after 1 July 2008, more than 1.5m-1 for both turbocharged and non-turbocharged engines

Or,

For vehicles first used before 1 July 2008: for a non-turbocharged engine, more than 2.50m-1 for turbocharged engines more than 3.00m-1.

Doesn’t mention in Section 7.4 (Emissions - compression ignition) as no cat fitted for a diesel engined car as a reason for failure either. VOSA will confirm the same if anybody calls them up if they are struggling with an MOT pass. The number is 0300 123 9000 Option 3.

Hope this helps and might clear up some confusion that some dubbers might be having!

Dean.
