cleaning intercooler....
« on: 05 April 2013, 21:11 »
Does anyone know what size hose is that connects to both sides of standard intercooler..... Want to give it a clean and current jubillee clips are rusted bad and want to replace.....

Has anyone cleaned / flushed out their intercooler recently.....? Should you expect to find much oil / crap inside  ?

When my cuz and I cleaned out his mums GT TDI inter cooler it was leaking oil so we took it off to find there was a lot of oil in the inter cooler that collected over a number of years. We used an entire can of carb cleaner on it and ensured it was nothing inside the inter cooler before we put it back on. Since doing that there hasn't been any more oil coming from the inter cooler and the car is running fine. That was over 5 months ago now. So yes it's normal to find abit of oil in the inter cooler and yes it's fine to clean it out. :)

Won't find much oil in a petrol intercooler but won't hurt to clean it out

Based on the amount of oil that gets to the throttle bodyi would imagine the intercooler would hav seen some build up over the years.....?

I think the hoses are 2.5". I cleaned my intercooler out with engine degreaser, rinsed it out with water then left a heat gun blowing hot air through it to dry it out.
