annoying black bumper inserts
« on: 05 April 2013, 17:36 »
Hello, I'm sick of my black bumper inserts and I haven't got the patience to keep looking out for bumpers or start plastic moulding them for a smooth effect so I was just having a think for a quick fix. tell me if this sounds ridiculous! but could I un-clip the inserts, sound them down (I say sand them down because I presume there textured) and paint them myself? Any advice guys? Chloe

Yeah chloe just make sure you prep it well..

Sand down thoroughly then use plastic primer sanding inbetween coats with 800 grit wet and dry. you can also sand inbetween coats of paint using very fine wet and dry. this makes sure you get flat paint and the best finish.

after the last coat of paint let it completly dry then use 1200 grit wet paper to buff the surface of the paint. it will go cloudy. (dont wory) spray on your coats of lacquer but dont sand inbetween these!

lol what colours your car? oh and make sure after the last coat of paint its completly cured not just touch dry. as the clear coat can react with the paint.. I go by smell sniff it and you should smell no chemicals (takes at least 48 hours) i would leave for 72.

inbetween coats of primer and paint you only have to leave about half an hour. make sure your wet and dry paper is wet and dont rub too hard and youl be fine

its LA7Z, I'm sure its called satin silver! reminds me... I better get some more paint tomorrow!  yeah I think the key is to just be patience with it and keep it inside away from dust and grit. do you know if the inserts clip off easily enough? I presume the whole bumpers will need to come off or is there a way to un-clip without taking off the bumper?

I always apply clear coat while the base coat is tacky , usually after about 20 mins.

Never been an issue. Here is a  mirror I done recently :

Looks good. i usualy very fine wet and dry the last coat of paint before clear coat to remove any bubbles imperfections etc so obviously it has to be dry. but before ive sprayed on to tacky paint and its reacted and sort of seperated and ruined the whole job

I think you can take them off with a screwdriver wraped in masking tape or a plastic knife etc if your feeling brave. there held on with snap on clips.

post pics of the results! unless it goes wrong lol
