How do people even do/get away with this
« on: 03 April 2013, 20:28 »
Doing some work on of of the local contacts van and has an ABS issue. Keeps cutting in randomly. Apparently it wasn't working at all in a near crash a year ago after a rear axle replacement and then someone plugged a sensor in and now it keeps randomly cutting in at slow speeds.

I get there after being told the van isn't stopping. No lights on dash.

No fluid in the reservoir it's all leaked out of the master cylinder. Next to no pads left on three pairs of pads and drivers side front nothing at all it's on the metal.

So sort the MC, pads out first along with a clutch cylinder and replace the seized caliper on the drivers front Couldn't free up the sliders even with very strong Hydrochloric acid. Brake light still not lighting up. Puzzled, I pull out the reservoir level sensor connector and retrieve the paperclip BRIDGING the wires. Then free up the level float that is stuck hence the light obviously being on permanently. Bought four new wear sensors. Why did I bother? Some moron has bridged all the sensor wires by twisting them together. Not even taped.

Join up the wear sensors with connectors in a way I don't really like doing but that's all the local shop had at the time. Proper connectors on order so all can be restored to stock. Fair enough the wires brake, this is unfortunate. BUT REPLACE IT PROPERLY YOU MORONS. One wire which wasn't connected properly had rubbed against the inside of the wheel so that it wore through the cables.

Onto the ABS issue. Damn 4 channel oscilloscopes for being so expensive. First off, we know it's most likely going to be a ring/bearing or dirty sensor issue. Or perhaps the air gap isn't quite right.

Let's check the resistances just in case. Both rears fine as were the fronts. Front rings cleaned up and all look good. Gaps within spec. Pretty happy rear is at fault.

Jump under van. ALL wiring after an airbag install a total tip. All wires running AROUND THE AIRBAG with the conduit rubbing through.

Curse a bit and then lock up one brake disc at a time on the rear axle with the wheels off the ground. Voltage check on both sensors in first gear. Drivers right has too much fluctuation.

Strip down, ABS ring not installed properly (are a b!tch to do) and sensor way too far a gap.

So what they've done is not been bothered to strip it back down and pulled a rear sensor. Why wasn't the light ever on while it was disconnected? Pull off the instrument panel and pull off the black tape over the bulb.

TL;DR: Don't use a very well known motorhome/big van service station in Leeds, Maidstone. Dodgy wayne kerrs.

Was. I'm a bit anal about wiring I do have to admit. In fact I'm a bit anal about a lot of things. All brake carriers/calipers and anything suspension and wheel bolt related is all torqued with a wrench rather than "it's tight".

But I really would be worried at night if I did that and just be thinking, has it crashed, has it crashed, has it crashed?

Terrible job and as I said, VERY well known and well respected company and the only company that has ever touched the van from new. Totally ripping the company that own the vans off too! £19.20 for a "genuine" oil filter with "Unipart" stamped all over the filter. Yeah right. Retail on one is £11.88.

Oh well, happy days I've taken em over. :afro:

Now who wants to lend me a few grand for a Verus?

sounds like some of the GSF vans i've had to sort out, and most of those are worked on at main dealers :undecided: apparently vw techs aren't allowed to solder anything.

If you're only working on VAG stuff Autologic p!sses all over anything from snap-on. I use bosch KTS for non-vag motors, i guess one of the main rivals to verus.. but better imo.

I don't get why they can't solder things as long as done properly!

Working on a range. What's the advantages over Snap-On? Like the scope on the Verus. These are all Iveco vans which are sh!te anyway.
