The gauge on your dash is coolant, not oil

Also the worst thing you can do is to let your car sit idle. All you are doing is clogging it up. Much better to get in and drive straight off

I would say that in 6 miles (approx 10 mins) the water is at 90 degrees the oil on the other hand has only just got to 50 degrees, its quite a bit longer before the oil is at 90 degrees. I would say at least another 5 miles. All when the outside temp is 0-4 degrees.  The highest I have ever had the oil is 111 degrees hummm it was a warmer day too on the motorway.

30 minutes idling - you must have money to burn! With the current cold weather, my GTD takes around 10 minutes of steady A road driving before it's up to a reasonable temperature. By then, I'll be getting around 40 mpg before hitting the motorway.

Just Google it....... I think you'll find that the consensus is NOT to idle when cold - for many reasons.
Start the car and by the time you've fiddled with the mirror, seatbelt, ICE, etc etc, it's ready to go..... But DON'T drive it like it's stolen... Wait till the (coolant) temp is coming up to the 90 mark before caning it.

10 seconds on idle to allow the oil to get around the turbo is ideal, then set off. Don't go over 2k revs for the first ten mins until the coolant is up to 90. Bare in mind though the oil takes even longer to heat through.

Leaving idling to warm up means there's no load. It's load that creates heat. Idling whilst cold means you're leaving your car running, with no temperature in the oil wearing things much quicker than driving.

Redlining whilst cold is a bit stupid if I'm honest...

...when I do get in and drive it straightaway, for the first few miles my average mpg is around 10-15mpg!! and thats without going over 1750rpm and driving easy.
Is that steep up-hill or something?!  I never leave mine to idle unless I'm scraping ice off, but I can average 30 mpg before the end of my road, from cold, in these chilly conditions, and that's less than a mile.  All very slightly up-hill, but only slightly.  I've managed, straight from cold, 52 mpg on a 7-mile/10-minute journey into work.

Woah! Why would you let it idle for 30 mins from cold?! Bad idea!
Like you said, redlining from cold isn't good. The simple answer is to get into the car and drive it normally, without redlining and letting it idle for an excessive amount of time. You've gone from one extreme to the other, and neither are good for your engine.

Im still a novice and in my mind it just seemed like a good thing to leave the car started until the oil temp rose.

But thanks for your suggestions and wont be leaving it idle again!
