what is a good sealant ?
« on: 26 March 2013, 21:52 »
Good evening,

I'm probably boring a lot of you now with my door leaking dilemma but I'm looking for the best stuff to use to seal the edges of the metal plate behind the door card to stop water leaking.

Ideally I would like to use butyl tape but it's difficult to buy unless ordered on the internet, but I'm too impatient. I want to get these doors sealed a.s.a.p.

If I use silicone , when I push the metal plate back onto the door it's just going to spread everywhere and not stay in one place which defeats the object.

If you have used certain things in the past to seal your car or know what's a good idea, I would be happy to hear from you.

Cheers

Use silicone, just apply a thin layer to both sides and let it dry a bit, so it's firm but still tacky.

well ive tried the silicone today and what a pain that was

ive got a funny feeling that its not going to solve my ptoblems when it fully dries as it was the equivalent of a burger with too much sauce lol. when it came to putting the plate back onto the door its just oozed out of the sides.

anybody got any suggestions for what i could use to seal around the metal plate incase it wasnt a good enough seal ?

As above, there is a small hole at the bottom of the door. All water should drain out through that.
You shouldn't need to silicone anything.

Is it the little plastic plug that is under the rubber flap as I've looked everywhere and unless this is the drainage hole then I don't know where it is.

But when I took the metal plate off there was no water inside but I did find a small trickle coming from behind the door card which led me to that direction, also the original rubber seal was soaking and rotten where the water was coming from.

A complete nightmare in all fairness, oh wait ..... It's not fair   :embarrassed:
