What colour is the coolant? A nice pink (or blue!) Or a dirty colour? If it looks clean I'd assume condensation as the previous owner says they only did short trips...... Give it a motorway blast and when its cooled down re- check for the 'Mayo'.
Mk VI Black Pearl GTD.... No Frills, replaced a Black Pearl PD150 Bora, which in turn replaced a Dragon Green VR6 which followed a Dusty Mauve MK III 8v Gti.

How about the dipstick, any goo on that?
When was the last oil/filter change? If it was a good while ago then perhaps a good idea to get it done.
I'd still assume condensation first tho.
Give it a good run
Did you buy it privately or a dealer?

Could that be something to do with a faulty gnition coil pack?? Or carbon canister?? :undecided:

I had the same when I bought mine bud, took it on a decent drive down the motorway (like 30/40mins at 70mph) and it all cleared up.

And with regards to the tapping, these direct injection engines are super tappy to begin with, if you are genuinely worried pop down to your nearest vw garage, they won't charge just to listen to your engine :)

TFSI Head Gaskets are not known as a weak point - I would also suggest that this is just condensation. Mine suffers from this in cold weather.
