basically this 1.3 is terrible. foot right down hardly get to 70mph iv had problems with it since I got it few months back, I'm getting a little tax rebate and don't know if I should put more money in to this car ie, weber, k&n filter, finish off the service iv been slowly giving it, straight through pipe.... or sell up n get a 1.6/1.8 as I think a gti be to much to insure atm.

the 1.3 are good engines. give it a good service, new coil rotor arm n dizzie with ht leads and plugs itll be fine. if that doesnt improve it, get the timing checked.
but it depens on bodywork really, if its mint make the engine good and keep. if not get shot and find a clean driver or similar

if you buy a 1.6 or 1.8 with its original Pierburg on you will have the same issues

iv done a part device, yet to do coil pack, n oil change. I really do need a weber tho damn carb! there's a few surfaces rust stone chip type so that won't be to much of a prob. on and a aftermarket sunroof leak that iv sealed up but looking to buy a new seal in hope it help it.

like I said its hard to get to 70 then in 5th with foot right down it loses power so maybe I should finish what iv started and go from there cheers.

one question. will I suffer from carb iceing with a open air k&n filter?

As said if everything else is good, besides the engine it would be good to keep and work from there. Engine swap maybe in the future? But a 1.3 is never going to blow you away. If your working on it yourself then keep on. See about timing and carb setup as there is likely issues there if its not getting you past 70...
