yes, you need to inform your insurance company.

BUT

before doing any of that,

get her to have a good few lessons with an instructor first
I totally agree, recipe for marital disharmony and despite what we all think..most of us passed our test a while ago and things have moved on a bit with the test since then.
can see that going down well  sorry dear you actually have to know how to drive before driving my car

not a case of that barry, its the first few lessons are key, so leave it to the professionals. did it with the wife, and the 3 eldest kids.

when i could see them safely departing and returning to the house THEN I was willing to take them out
agree with you but just doesnt sound good saying that to the wife

I see the problem here

the answer

My wife is a learner and insured on our car (one reason for a having a lower powered car). She's had lessons with proper instructors, so whenever she's driving our car it's just for practice.
Beware some insurance companies won't insure learners (Direct Line for example), so you'll have to shop around for a good quote with a learner on the policy. It will put your insurance up having a learner on the policy, but it not as much as putting a completely newly qualified driver on the policy.
Newly qualified drivers cost more than learners because learners are always in the car with an "experienced" driver.

  • If she's going to have lessons with an instructor, don't you try to teach her, it will just lead to confusion.
  • It's probably not the best idea for her to drive your car if it's bigger or more powerful than the instructors car as she needs to get to know the one car that she will do her test in. In particular spacial awareness when manouvering.
  • Don't teach her if you already argue about little things.
  • You must have a LOT of patience.
  • She must be willing to be corrected.
  • You must be willing to give up the drivers seat and get to your destination slower.
  • No matter how good you think your driving is, it's not going to be as good as an instructor.

I'd fail on those points straight away, hence my eldest daughter had professional lessons and passed second time.

Definitely get lessons in first, I remember trying a few lessons with my brother never again, his big barge had no brakes, was really long and heavy and it wasn't something to easy to get used to, when I had been driving a fiesta. Plus if I did fudge anything up then dealing with a family member is something else compared to just letting an instructor deal with it via his insurance cover.

But basically you need to contact your insurers about having your OH learning on your car. Also I suggest you start looking for a good divorce solicitor or marriage councillor
