do i need to remove window to re-seal
« on: 23 March 2013, 14:33 »
Hi everyone,

Im going to try and sort out the leak from my driver side door.

When i take the door trim off i expose the metal plate which hold the window regulator. For me to be able to take the metal plate off and look inside, do i have to also be prepared to take the glass out.
This is not something i want to do ideally as knowing my luck it will start to rain.

So if you know any way i can just take the plate off and look inside please could you let me know.

Any help appreciated

Yes you do. If it has the metal brackets rather than the standard plastic ones then the might/should have been tightened slightly to stop the window from being pulled out but if not, just put the window down half way and then lift it out. I pulled the taller part of the glass up and it gives you the room to get the more pointy end out. If that makes sense?

I did not remove the glass. towel round top of door to protect paint and some duct tape on ext of glass round towel and then to inside of glass. holds it fine when you release the clips holding it on.

Well I've been having trouble getting access to the bolts that secure the metal arms to the metal plate. They are tricky to get access to as they are at the bottom near the edge of the plate .

Any tips to get the plate off easily

Which ones are you talking about? All you need to do is remove the several (12ish? 10mm - ish bolts) that hold the metal part to the door and pop the two rubber seals off and wind the window partially down to reveal the two torx head bolts then pull the glass up and out or tape it to the too of the door and remove the metal door skin part with the window motor etc etc on?

Not sure which ones youre talking about as everything is easily accessible?

I know you have to remove all of the 10mm bolts but there are also 4 x 13mm nuts attached to bolts .
They are connected to the metal arms inside and these bolts are at the top and bottom of them .

Problem is... These nuts are hard to get off as the whole boot keeps turning inside so I can only just about get my two fingers inside the rubber holes to secure them as I use the socket on the outside. This is all good and well for the top ones but for the bottom ones I have to put my arm down inside the plate from the top and TRY to keep the boot still as I turn the nut from the outside again.

This is the part I'm struggling with as when my arm is inside its bending the plate out of shape. These two bottom screws are what makes it difficult to remove the plate completely.

How do I take the plate off in full or get access to these bottom bolts.

Don't unscrew the 4 in the middle (sort of) the metal panel, they hold the regulator in place and could be tricky to get it back together if it all comes loose etc

I'm still a bit lost as to the four bolts, I thought the motor was held in with more torx heads and the runners for the windows/cable/clips are riveted on.

Regardless, just remove the 10mm bolts and undo the glass as above then lift the glass out or secure it and remove the metal panel, you might need to wind the window clips up or down if its catching but it certainly all comes out then.

Don't be gentle with it ;)
