What does the eccentric adjuster on gear lever do on a 1992 MK2 Golf 8v?

Just wondered if anyone could give me a dummy proof explanation of what the eccentric adjuster does on the gear lever. There is an allen key bolt with a plus and negative symbol. What happens when you turn it clockwise and anticlockwise? Thanks

Adjusts the stick for clearing the gate into reverse
