8v conversion advice needed please
« on: 22 March 2013, 18:38 »
Hi, as it says on the topic title i need abit of advice my expert vw pals,
i have a 8v gti mk3, its the 1997 model 5 door hatch,
as you know 8vs aren't exactly the best of the Gti power wise, so im already bored of it abit, I'm looking to do a 16v Gti transplant as I love the shell of this car and only if it was a 16v it would b perfect,
please bare in mind this shell is mint and loads of history from 1999
so its a rare minter with zero rust and had a 8v head rebuilt at 68,000 miles, currently 112,000

BBC QUESTION TIME LOL:

1. can i use the 8v bottom end and just change the Head to a 16v?

2. what else needs changing? gearbox? ecu? clutch? wiring? fuel pump? brakes? anything i haven't listed???

3. does anyone know anyone decent to carry out such work around the East Midlands? or anyone near Nottingham or the closest person to me?

4. what sort of cost inc parts labour?

please serious answers as I'm really looking forward to do this project...
THANK YOU

This was asked before. Dont think you can use a 16v head on an 8v. You could just get a full 16v conversion for about 200-250 inc gearboxm loom wise should be same. Do loads of research before you buy anything. Also khare on here did an 16v convo. Pm him?

- Engine, gearbox and all parts associated such as starter, alternator, clutch. (anything else)
- key and immobilizer
- ECU
- Engine Loom
- Clocks
- Immob box and loom
- hydro clutch + clutch line
- airbox and airbox to throttle body pipe

there are just as good 16v shells out there to make this conversion a waste of your time and money.
Just look about and pick a beauty, be fussy and you'll be right.

Or take some advanced driving lessons and make yourself a better driver so you don't need the extra power ;)

I believe the main issue is the 8v is a tall block engine (in euro land). where as the usa uses an 8v crossflow motor (which sits lower in the bay) and i believe you can fit the 16v head etc

look at the inlet manifolds on the 16v and the 8v and you will see where the issues would be. yet look at a usa engine and they use a similar inlet manifold set up

I'm pretty sure you can use the 8V gearbox and clutch set up with the 16v engine as well. Ignore what people say about it being a waste of your time/money, if you want to do it, go for it. Engines can be had for £200-300. Or pick up a rotten MOT failure with a good engine for peanuts then scrap the shell.

The gearbox wont last long on the 16v as the rivets tend to go pop and then your left with a big gash on the back of the box with oil gushing everywere
