Golf MK 4 Indicator/Break Pedal Help Please
« on: 22 March 2013, 18:17 »
Hi, have just purchased a Golf MK4 GTI 1999.  It's great i love it!

One thing though.  I put the left indicator on and if i press the break pedal it goes off.

If i hold my foot down on the break the indicator does nothing.  Right one is always fine.  This is pretty consistent from the moment i start the car.  I have noticed if some times the flashing will speed up or slow down too, before going off altogether.  I release the break, and flick the indicator and it works again until break is pressed.

Tried to be as through as possible and i'm sorry if this has been posted before but i have spent a while searching online with no definitive answer.

Just wondering if this is familiar to anyone?

Cheers,

David

check you have the correct bulbs in the rear left light cluster, and while you're in there look for signs of corrosion/shorts in the wiring, connectors and bulb holders.

I'm pretty sure the indicators and brake lights share a common ground in the rear light cluster. An open circuit or high resistance on the ground would cause the the problems you're having.

You have an earth problem. From the bulb holder you will probably find the earth wire is corroded from water ingress. Try running a wiring from that pin in the connector block straight to the cars body. You should find the problem goes
